Wright Bros. Memorial offers three fee-free days
The National Park Service's third free weekend of the summer is August 15 and 16, which means entrance fees will be waived at the Wright Brothers National Memorial and the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site.
On August 19, Orville Wright's 138th birthday, the Wright Brothers National Memorial celebrates National Aviation Day with special programs all day at the Kill Devil Hills park. A spokesman said the park's usual entrance fees ($4 for those 16 and older) will be waived for Wednesday's celebration.
The Sandburg Home, at Flat Rock, normally charges for the guided house tour ($5 for ages 16 and older, $3 for ages 62 and older) but admission to the grounds, which has hiking trails and a goat barn, is free.
Other national parks in North Carolina do not charge entrance fees.
