Season's first red wolves found
U. S. Fish and Wildlife biologists last week reported finding the first red wolf pups of the 2009 season, says the Outer Banks Sentinel. The litter of two male and one female pups is part of the Milltail Pack, which was established early in the recovery program on a wildlife refuge farming unit.
To date, 10 litters and a total of 34 pups have been located in the recovery area in eastern North Carolina, the newspaper says.
Red wolves were re-introduced to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in 1987. Today, approximately 15 red wolf packs live in the wild on 1.7 million acres of public and private land.
