Sewage spill closes Pilot Mountain campground
Pilot Mountain State Park has closed its campground as work to repair a ruptured sewage pipe continues, the state Division of Parks and Recreation said Tuesday.
About 2,000 gallons of effluent were spilled in an undeveloped area of the park near U.S. 52 before the spill was discovered and contained Monday morning. The failed pipe served the campground, which normally closes for the season November 30.
Also at Pilot Mountain, summit restrooms were closed November 16 for renovations. Power to the park may also be intermittently interrupted as contractors replace underground electric lines, an alert on the park's Web page says. The summit parking area will still be open and portable toilets will be available during construction.
