Hurricane Bill raises surf at Hatteras
Cape Hatteras National Seashore is closed to off-road vehicles as officials wait for Hurricane Bill to churn past. Heavy surf conditions, with unusually high waves and dangerous rip currents, are predicted over the weekend with possible ocean overwash and flooding of roadways, a National Park Service news release says.
All park beach access ramps were closed to off-road vehicles by 6 p.m. Friday, and beaches will be closed to vehicles during high tide through Sunday's 10:11 a.m. high-water mark. (Get the latest on Bill's progress here.)
Campgrounds and visitor centers are not affected.
