Great Smoky Mountains turning 75
Among the many articles noting the 75th anniversary of the founding of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Knoxville News Sentinel's includes an overview of celebrations next week and footage of President Roosevelt dedicating the park in September 1940.
The Smoky Mountains 75th Anniversary site lists events that are part of next weekend's celebrations at Cades Cove on Saturday, park headquarters in Gatlinburg on Sunday and at Oconaluftee on Monday, which is to include a ceremonial groundbreaking on the new visitor center and history cultural museum. On September 2, the park will hold a rededication at the Rockefeller Memorial at Newfound Gap.
Saturday's event at Cades Cove is to include a 90-minute performance by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and will require a $25 vehicle pass ($50 for vehicles carrying more than 15 people). The concert begins at 3 p.m.
