Carvers Creek state park expands
Carvers Creek Sandhills State Park, under development near Fayetteville, will gain about 1,400 acres later this year, doubling its size, according to The Fayetteville Observer.
As The Observer reported in a June article about the slow development of North Carolina's 38th state park, the Nature Conservancy is donating part of the former Rockefeller estate, known as Long Valley Farm. The newly approved acquisition is 1,380 acres off N.C. 87, southwest of the 1,395 acres north of Fayetteville already designated for the state park.
Though development is "very much in a holding pattern," the Division of Parks and Recreation is writing a master plan for the park, spokesman Charlie Peek told The Observer. "This (donation) gives us some property that is suitable for development and a park facility. ... We hope to have something tangible around the end of the year."
