Cape Lookout ferry service under consideration
Cape Lookout National Seashore is considering offering passenger ferry service to Shackleford Banks and to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse area of South Core Banks. The departure site would be in the Beaufort and Morehead City area.
Cape Lookout National Seashore can only be reached by boat, and visitors without their own transportation currently must take private ferries.
An environmental assessment will consider available sites, site characteristics and requirements, including accessibility issues and opportunities for sharing facilities and partnering with the Towns of Beaufort and Morehead City and other government agencies, such as the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
The park is inviting public comments regarding potential issues and concerns that should be considered during the planning process. Park staff will be at a public meeting Wednesday, August 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Duke University Marine Lab auditorium on Pivers Island (between Morehead City and Beaufort) to provide information and answer questions.
Comments may also be made by mail (see the link above) by September 25.
(Note: this post was edited to add the link to a list of NPS-authorized ferry services.)
