Blue Ridge Parkway coin due in 2015
The U.S. Mint has announced plans for a series of quarters depicting national parks, with one coin minted for each state and territory beginning next year. They will be released in order of each represented park's establishment as a federal site.
According to the Associated Press, a quarter representing the Blue Ridge Parkway, established in 1936, will be minted in 2015 as North Carolina's entry in the series. A quarter depicting Great Smoky Mountains National Park, established in 1926, will be struck in 2014 for Tennessee.
The first five quarters to be minted next year are for Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas (founded in 1832); Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (1872); Yosemite National Park, California (1890); Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona (1893); and Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon (1893).
The project is to run until 2021, when the 56th quarter in the series, for the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, established in Alabama in 1998, is to be be circulated.
