A Hammocks Beach getaway
The News & Observer takes a journey to Hammocks Beach State Park, "a unique triumvirate of islands" near Swansboro.
Hammocks Beach State Park, about 1,160 acres in all, includes Bear Island, to which ferry service is provided; Huggins Island and Jones Island, which can be reached by private boat; and the office and ferry dock on the mainland. The park is available for boating, camping, fishing, picnicking and swimming, and offers educational exhibits and events.
"Fifteen years ago we put our first canoe and kayak trail in," Sam Bland, recently retired after 30 years of service to the state park system, including 22 years at Hammocks Beach, told The N&O. "Since that time it has been a destination park for canoers and kayakers."
