Sycamore Flats

Sycamore Flats is a large picnic area with access to the Davidson River that is next to the Davidson River Campground. A half-mile paved walking trail encircles the picnic area, and there are restrooms with flush toilets, a picnic shelter with a grill, and an information kiosk. Tall Sycamore trees and Rhododendron shade the picnic tables. The day use area is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The unassuming roadside attraction is a nice example of the lengths the state and federal governments will go to in preserving recreational areas. The river was restored in 2002 after over-use resulted in damage and again after being severely damaged by Hurricanes Frances and Ivan, which struck in 2004.

The shallow Davidson River is popular for wading, fly fishing and tubing. A rental outfit just up the road ferries tubers upstream so they can float back past the campground and Sycamore Flats, and return their tubes.
