| Sycamore Flats is a large picnic area with access to the Davidson River that is next to the Davidson River Campground. A half-mile paved walking trail encircles the picnic area, and there are restrooms with flush toilets, a picnic shelter with a grill, and an information kiosk. Tall Sycamore trees and Rhododendron shade the picnic tables. The day use area is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The unassuming roadside attraction is a nice example of the lengths the state and federal governments will go to in preserving recreational areas. The river was restored in 2002 after over-use resulted in damage and again after being severely damaged by Hurricanes Frances and Ivan, which struck in 2004. |

The shallow Davidson River is popular for wading, fly fishing and tubing. A rental outfit just up the road ferries tubers upstream so they can float back past the campground and Sycamore Flats, and return their tubes.
