National Parks - South Carolina

There are seven National Park Service properties in south Carolina, most of which are historic military battlegrounds.

The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, which traces the path of Patriots from Virginia to South Carolina, ends at Kings Mountain National Military Park.

The Charles Pinckney National Historic Site

Charles Pinckney was a principal author and a signer of the United States Constitution. This remnant of his coastal plantation includes 28 acres called Snee Farm, which has a half-mile walking trail with exhibits that describe the existing house, archeological excavations, agricultural history and how neighboring water and wetlands contributed to the plantation. A circa-1828 visitor center is located in a Lowcountry farmhouse.

Congaree is mostly designated wilderness and has more than 20 miles of backwoods hiking trails, a 2.4-mile boardwalk loop trail, paddle trails, primitive campsites, opportunities for fishing, and more.

Cowpens National Battlefield

The Revolutionary War battle site includes the trailhead for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, a partially paved 1.3-mile battlefield trail with wayside exhibits, a 3.8-mile road circling the battlefield, a visitors center and picnic area.

Fort Sumter National Monument

Fort Sumter is designated historic, so recreational activities are limited to passive pursuits such as scenic viewing and bird watching. Fort Moultrie is open to self-guided tours. Other activities available on the NPS property include bird watching, boating, fishing, kayaking, nature walks and wildlife viewing.

Kings Mountain National Military Park

In addition to a 1.5-mile self-guiding walking trail around the battlefield and a hike-in campsite, along with the adjoining Kings Mountain State Park, the park offers 16 miles of hiking trails and 16 miles of bridle paths. There's also a museum about the decisive Revolutionary battle fought here.

Ninety Six National Historic Site

This site of two Revolutionary War battles has several hiking trails, a one-mile interpretive trail, a pond where fishing is allowed in season, and opportunities for wildlife viewing. There's also a small museum.

South Carolina National Heritage Corridor

The 14 counties and four designated regions of the Heritage Corridor offer a cross-section of the state's historical, cultural and natural resources. As such, it takes in a variety of venues. The Mountains Lakes Region has whitewater rivers, waterfalls, mountain lakes and hiking trails. The Low Country Region includes Cape Romaine National Wildlife Refuge and the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge.
