Mount Mitchell Camping

Mount Mitchell Camping - Click for More Info The campground at Mount Mitchell State Park is small, with only nine tent sites that you have to walk up from a parking lot to get to. Sites are among the trees that invariably sway overhead with the rushing sound of wind. The shot below looks down on an empty site from the ridge above, near the bathroom.

A closer shot of me getting into my tent gives you a better idea of the size of the tent pads. Chris in Tent

Mount Mitchell Clouds Roll In As it is more days than not, Mount Mitchell was in the clouds the October weekend we were there. From near the restaurant, we watched the clouds gather around the peaks above and below. The stripped trees show the effects of air pollution and damaging insects. In a moment of clarity, below, the highest peak east of the Mississippi and its the observation tower are visible in the distance.
Mount Mitchell in Distance What you want to do at Mitchell is get down off the mountain into the Pisgah Forest. I have a look at our trip out Commissary Ridge on a separate Pisgah Forest camping page. We actually camped beside the road outside the park the night we arrived late, then in the Pisgah for a night before returning and spending a night in the park.
