Morrow Mountain State Park

River at Morrow Mountain Morrow Mountain, in the central part of the state, has a lot to offer. The hills of the Uwharrie range have surprising elevation for the Piedmont, and the park stretches down to the Pee Dee River and Lake Tillery, which are popular for boating and fishing. Between, there's 15 miles of trails, an exhibit hall, a 19th century homestead and a swimming pool.

The pool, which I'm sorry we don't have a photo of, is large. Its stone bathhouse dates to the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Work Projects Administration. It hadn't opened for the season yet when were there.

The family-style campground has large, tree-shaded sites, and bathouses are at the center of each of the three loops. Campsite at Morrow Mountain

Deer at Morrow Mountain
On our second morning, four deer grazed casually behind our campsite. We were separated by a gully, but they were totally unfazed by our presence. Click on the photo for a closer look if you need to see a picture of deer; they're pretty common these days.

Jake at Morrow Mountain A fishing pier runs parallel to the river - or I should say rivers; the Pee Dee, Yadkin and Uwharrie rivers converge at the park. There's plenty of room for bank fishing and just wandering around at the water's edge, too. Canoes are available for rent, as well. That's Jake at a canoe launch. At right is a stump in the water that had an interesting look. Stump in water at Morrow Mountain
