Department of Defense recreation site mapThe military bases in North Carolina offer a variety of outdoor recreation sites for individuals connected to the military, including campgrounds and recreation areas with rentals at the beach.

One is specifically open to civilians:

The park and beach at Smith Lake are open to the public. In addition to swimming, the beach has a playground, children's waterslide, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic tables and grills, dressing rooms, and pavilions that can be rented. The park also offers camping for tents and RVs, cabins, mountain bike trails, paintball and horseback riding, including stables and guided pony and trail rides. Admission to the park is $4 with a military ID and $5 for civilians. Kids younger than 13 get in free. Bike trails and paint ball cost extra.
