The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the star attraction of the national park, and is open from the third Friday in April to Columbus Day for those willing to climb the stairway, which curls upward at right.
You have to take a ferry to Ocracoke; passengers leaving for Swanquarter or Cedar Island get a nice view of Ocracoke's harbor receding as they head out.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and measures 210 feet from the bottom of the foundation to the top of the pinnacle of the tower.

The area known as the national seashore includes Ocracoke Island to the south of Cape Hatteras, which is home to the Ocracoke Lighthouse (left), and Bodie Island to the north, which has its own lighthouse. Visitors aren't allowed to enter either of them.
