The U.S. Army's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Web site has a guide to six Department of Defense family campgrounds in North Carolina, and there are several additional tents-only campgrounds available. In general these facilities are available to active duty, reserve or retired military, National Guard, or Department of Defense civilians, though Smith Lake Recreation Park at Fort Bragg is open to civilians.
Oak Grove Recreation Area, Camp Lejeune. (Locator Map). 4 primitive campsites, drinking water, port-a-johns, picnic tables and grills. $10 per site, up to 20 eople each. Reservations required at least five days ahead of time. (910) 451-1440.
Onslow Beach Recreational Area. (Locator Map) 26 RV sites and 15 tent sites with water, sewage, electricity, cable TV and laundry. The area also has cottages, cabanas and trailers for rent. Camping is $15 per day. Additional rates (on the Web page above) vary. Reservations may be made 30 days in advance. Note that Onslow Beach's Web site and the Army's MWR site have conflicting information. (910) 450-7502.
