Carolina Outdoors Guide is designed, compiled and written by Christopher E. Nelson.

The site is based on a publication called Discover Carolina Outdoors that Chris researched and wrote for the Display Advertising Department of The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, each year from 2004-2006. This Web version has more information than was possible to put in the printed publication, including maps, and has additional material based on Chris' visits with family and friends to the places listed. The companion This Land, Your Land blog keeps up with developments at public lands in North Carolina and thereby updates the website.

Chris also created and manages Carolina Music Festivals, a comprehensive calendar and guide to multi-act, daylong or multiple-day music shows in North Carolina, and The Medium, The Message, a blog that keeps up with media, with a focus on advertising, newspapers and The McClatchy Co., the third-largest newspaper publisher in the country and owner of The N&O.Chris, Pam and Jake at Mount Mitchell
Chris is a former copy editor and writer for The N&O's Niche Publications Division where, in addition to Discover Carolina Outdoors, he wrote and edited Living in Style magazine, as well as several other publications, sales and marketing material, and internal and external websites. After being laid off by The N&O, he was managing editor of The Slammer, a weekly newspaper about crime, from December 2009 to August 2011.

Chris' family is his wife, Pamela Blackburn Nelson, and his son, Jake Nelson. They often travel with him. Pam, who is a veteran copy editor for The News & Observer/Charlotte Observer, writes The Grammar Guide, a blog about grammar and usage.
